Most people put off trimming their pet's nails because clippers are stressful for everyone involved. One bad angle and you catch the quick, there is blood and yelping, and after that your dog remembers exactly what the clippers look like and will not hand over a paw again.

A grinder takes the guesswork out of it. Instead of cutting through the nail in one committed snap, a spinning grinding head files the nail down a layer at a time, so you can take off a little, check, and stop the moment you get close to the quick. The built-in LED light points right at the nail while you work, which matters most on dogs with dark nails where the quick is impossible to see otherwise. It also leaves the edge smooth instead of sharp and splintered, which your floors, your furniture and your legs will all appreciate.

It is rechargeable, with a digital display on the handle showing the remaining battery, so it does not die halfway through the second paw. The shroud around the grinding head catches most of the nail dust instead of letting it drift onto your carpet.

Works for cats and dogs. Like anything involving paws, go slowly the first few times. Let them get used to the sound and the vibration before you try to do all four feet in one sitting, and grind in short bursts rather than holding it against one nail.

• Electric grinding head files nails down a layer at a time
• Built-in LED light to see the nail, and the quick, while you work
• Rechargeable, with a digital battery display on the handle
• Shrouded head that contains most of the nail dust
• Suits both cats and dogs, in a white ABS housing

Nails are one part of a grooming routine. The deshedding comb handles coat and shedding, and the paw cleaner cup deals with what comes in on those paws after a walk.
